Mountain Experience Peru Trek Information

Nola Royce, To Life! Program Coordinator, mountaineer and two-time breast cancer survivor, who has climbed on all seven continents, will be trekking and climbing this July in Peru’s Cordillera Huayhuash for To Life! 

This event is a joint effort between To Life! and Mountain Experience to raise awareness and funds to help To Life! continue to serve the community, through its free education and support programs and services, for women and their families dealing with breast cancer.

To Life! is a 6-year old nonprofit organization, founded by Mara Ginsberg at the age of 37, when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer.  She realized there were unmet needs in the Capital District regarding breast cancer education, awareness and support. Since To Life!’s inception, the organization has reached thousands of women and their families throughout the Capital District who are dealing with breast cancer and related women’s health issues.  To Life! offers BSE (Breast Self Examination) training, the Abracadabra Boutique, wellness classes and weekly support programs, in addition to monthly education forums.  As of 2004, To Life! offers many of these services in their new home at 410 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar, NY.

Since the early ‘70’s, when Nola Royce moved to the Albany area from downstate, she has been hiking and climbing locally, nationally and internationally, reaching heights of 7,000+ meters (over 23,000 feet) in the Pamir of Central Asia.

Nola has climbed in the US, New Zealand and Australia with Expedition Inspiration following her initial diagnosis of breast cancer in 1996.  She is an ADK Winter 46-R, has hiked all the Catskill peaks over 3,500 feet in winter and all the Northeast peaks (111) over 4,000 feet in winter as well. Much of this hiking was done to prepare for her ascent of Denali, which she climbed with Jason Edwards as her guide.  Nola first met Jason in 1986, when she attended a 5-day mountaineering program on Mt. Rainier.  Their friendship has brought them together on Denali (1988), Mt. Kilimanjaro (2000) and now Peru in 2004!

The goal of the Peru Trek is to raise $10,000.00 for this worthy cause.  All contributions go directly toward programs and services for women and their families; and are tax deductible.  To Life! is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organized under the NYS Not-for-Profit Corporation Law. Donations for the Peru Trek will be accepted through 2004.
